What MediaBarCamp Is
What is MediaBarCamp?
MediaBarCamp 2009 is a unique international ‘non-conference’ on new media and media activism. About 200 media activists will take part in the non-conference, including various IT specialists from Belarus, Baltic countries and CIS. Let’s make it clear, shall we.
Why MediaBarCamp?
Special attention is expected to be given to various media projects that represent certain groups’ viewpoints, with emphasis on people, not TV or radio stations. We are focused on those who film videos about their or their friends’ activities, express personal thoughts in blogs (importantly, no scribbler or any kind of graph maniacs, developed or critical thinking only), record podcasts, make photo reports on burning issues of the day. We welcome those who are skilled at high end media technologies.
According to the BarCamps’ Regulations, all participants feel as free and easy as inside a respectful bar. Absolute freedom of movement in a countryside picnic style is supposed.
Why Non-conference?
Traditional conferences consist of long-lasting papers, sleep-inducing plenary reports, invited stars and passive audience that applaud from time to time. Non-conference has no well-defined division between speakers and listeners. In order to take part you must register, work up a presentation, make an announcement and place a MediaBarCamp link on your blog or media project. Be active. Don’t wait for instructions, try and do something.
Why New Media And Media Activism?
New Media today is a new environment for the existence of modern culture, which is not museums’ dust collecting stuff. It is being created right here and right now. Elements of human environment that create our daily routine are also a culture. This kind of culture exists due to media area. New Media () as well as Tactical Media ) act the leading part here. Shooting videos and editing photos on computer became incredibly simple, it is no more the duty of specially trained ‘caste’ of journalists. Everyone can become a TV channel, a broadcasting station, a newspaper or whatever he likes. Tactical Media is not a piece of cake. Four festivals on Tactical Media ‘Next 5 Minutes’ have already been hold in Holland ().
Why International?
No citizenship limitations for attendees established. It is presupposed that the main part of participants will be from Belarus and Lithuania, but every interested person disregarding the denomination or color of the passport or skin or any other discrimination may apply and participate.
